Abstract: Collaborative innovation has the consistency of its history and logic in the narrative of rationalization of modern universities, which is a “red line” through the course of their development. It is a new stage of the popularization of Chinese universities. It marks their closer relationship with society and offers them a new opportunity of their role orientation and functional innovation. In the context of collaborative innovation, Chinese universities should fulfill their mission of inheritance and development of human civilization by reconfirming their role as knowledge creators and enhancing their role awareness in the new contradiction and unity as well as by clarifying their responsibility and function in innovation of knowledge, academic invention, creation of civilization and cultivation of people.
