Abstract:Short stories comprise an important part of Pearl S. Bucks literary works, yet they have received relatively little critical attention. From The First Wife and Other Stories, to Today and Forever, and then to Fourteen Stories, a decline has set in her writing of short stories. The influence of traditional Chinese narrative is noticeable in Pearl S. Bucks early short stories, which contrast sharply with those written by modern Western short story masters. Her late short stories, intending “to please and to amuse”, seem geared for popular magazines, and her best short stories are written in the realistic vein.
