Abstract:
Pearl S. Bucks The Living Reed is an epic of modern Koreans, which is plotted around the three generations of an aristocratic Kim family, who devoted themselves to the independence and prosperity of Korea from 1881 to 1945. Mrs Buck adopts various skills to present to American readers 4000 years of Korean culture, national characteristics and political evolutions. Her unmatchable mastery of East Asian diplomatic complexity and political fights among exile Korean groups highlights such a historical fiction. However, her UScentered liberalist outlook strikes a discursive conspiracy with US governments cold war diplomacy of integration among the free world.
