Abstract: The role of state in modernization is an important topic in current theories of modernization. The postwar modernization theories in the West went through a bumpy progress concerning this issue. At the early stage, they stressed the role of free economy, democratic politics and individual values in modernization in line with the liberal tradition in the Western history, and applied such understandings to the Third World. The failure in the Third World forced them to inquire into the role of powerful states in maintaining political order, econimic adjustment and social integration. They reassessed the role of state in modernization, and drawing the lessons from developing countries and regions, advanced some theories that may cast light on the modernization of the developing countries in the Third World.
