Abstract:The professional success of outstanding talents in universities needs not only good external factors but also their own internal factors, among which psychological traits play important roles. Based on indepth interviews with 19 outstanding academic talents such as academicians and Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professors, using open coding, spindle coding and selection coding by the Nvivo11 qualitative analysis tool, this paper summarizes psychological traits on professional success of outstanding talents. These psychological traits include four firstlevel categories, which are career management, criticism and creativity, collaborative problem solving, selfcontrol and adjustment, and 11 secondlevel categories such as selfawareness, creative thinking, teamwork, and selfcontrol. Based on this, it is necessary to promote the formation of excellent internal psychological traits to drive the growth of outstanding talents. Specifically, universities should establish the system of career guidance and management throughout the whole life course of outstanding talents; cultivate critical and creative thinking by offering kinds of guarantees for the cultivation of outstanding talents and especially establishing the challenging and faulttolerant atmosphere; provide relevant talents with shared resources, fund them to conduct multichannel academic exchanges, and guide them to conduct teamwork; establish a normalized mechanism of psychological support and health care services.
