Abstract The Appraisal Theory is a new lexical frame in the study of interpersonal meaning developed from the systemic functional linguistics. It focuses on different kinds of attitudes in discourse. Based on this theory, this paper makes a linguistic analysis of the meaning of the attitude of Pearl S. Buck The Fighting Angel, a biography for her farther. It elaborates the process about her understanding of the image of her farther, and analyzes the transformation of her emotion and attitude permeated in her words depicting her father, thus helping the readers enjoy the artistic charm of the language.
