Abstract:Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive index for assessing the autonomic nervous system’s regulation of cardiac rhythm. This index reflects the automaticity of the heart and information related to physiological states. HRV has been used to evaluate the cardiac health, predict the risk of cardiovascular events, and monitor the efficacy of diseases. In recent years, related studies have found that HRV also has important values in evaluating non-cardiovascular system diseases, as well as mental stress and stress responses. This article reviews the history, recent advances in research and application of HRV, aiming to provide more information for clinical physicians.
