Abstract Broadening the subject span of the faculty, and reducing the faculty number are important trends in faculty reform of China's universities. Multidisciplinary colleges objectively existing within universities are realistic references for examining this reform trend. Through analytical logics of the new institutional school of organizational sociology, the study investigates 30year development history of multidisciplinary W college in H university, and finds that departments of this type of college are gradually toward differentiation, and become independent colleges. This shows that the operation of multidisciplinary colleges encounters some difficulties. The collegecentered logic of resource allocation in universities leads to the frustration of resource allocation of multidisciplinary colleges. The alienation of the academic power within the college leads to the formation of "small groups" pursuing their own interests among departments. The threelevel relationship among universities, schools and departments is difficult to be straightened out, and the governance mechanism of schools and departments fluctuates constantly. To resolve the predicaments and promote the development of multidisciplinary colleges, in terms of the system design, Chinese universities could improve the overall system design of college governance, and adopt diversified ways of college governance to provide institutional guarantee for their operation. In terms of resource allocation, the logic of resource allocation based on the unit of the college should be changed to build a platform for resource demand docking between grassroots academic organizations and universities. In terms of discipline development, universities could make use of the discipline advantages of this type of college to create a characteristic research field.
