Abstract Danwei, which literally means “working unit or place” in the Chinese language, is the very foundation upon which contemporary Chinese universities are organized. The implementation of pension insurance system is a landmark event in the disintegration of the Danwei system. This disintegration will promote the universitys ability to independently allocate human resources, to manage internal affairs by law, and to consciously cultivate “cultural soft power”. At the same time, this disintegration may cause such problems as the weakening control of national ideology, and the cultural and psychological shock upon the old generation, on which we should keep alert.
