Abstract Different university spirits creat different universities, and firstclass university spirit is the foundation of firstclass university. Firstclass university spirit is to explore the wisdom, benefit mankind, defend truth, and advocate independent thinking，selflessness and fearlessness as well as pureness and focus. This spirit is both radical and conservative; it is both rational and emotional. Firstclass university spirit inclusive of firstclass talent and firstclass academic, is the sole way to construct "double first class". To nurture this spirit is based upon the establishment of the development concept with university teachers and students as the center, the cultivation of the habit of independent thinking, and the expansion of teachers′ knowledge and students′ horizons.
