Abstract From the perspective of path dependence, this study analyzes the phenomenon of path dependence in the establishment of schools by taking 1108 schools set up by the first round of "Double FirstClass" construction universities as the research objects. The research found that there are three paths for the establishment of schools in the firstclass universities: the phased centralized setting driven by external policies, the firstlevel disciplineoriented setting under the constraint of discipline system, and the independent school setting under the twolevel management system. Their interweaving is not conducive to integrating disciplinary resources, rationalizing the governance structure, and promoting interdisciplinary development. These path dependencies are essentially resource dependencies and the consequent cognitive dependencies. The path optimization set by the school can start from the perspectives of resources, cognition, and actions, that is, optimizing the allocation of discipline resources, recognizing the connotation of the school organization, and stimulating the initiative of the discipline community.
