Abstract The construction of worldclass universities is a strategic goal of Chinese universities. The ARWU data displays that the overall academic level of Chinese universities is on the rise although there are some fluctuations. The academic levels of Chinese universities show differences on a year base, and are improving year by year. However, there is still a big gap of the overall academic competitiveness between Chinese universities and the worldclass ones. Compared with the worldclass universities, there is large deficiency in the structure optimization of the academic competitiveness of Chinese universities, and the core academic competitiveness of Chinese universities has obvious disadvantages. The successful development experience of world universities should be borrowed to improve the overall academic competitiveness of Chinese universities. Universities and disciplines which have gained comparative advantages in development should be funded preferably and speed up their pace into the worldclass universities and disciplines. A scientific and effective academic evaluation system should be constructed to inspire the initiatives of Chinese universities in pursuit of the firstclass of the world. The internal governance structure should be improved to optimize the resources allocation in the worldclass universities construction.
