Abstract As the model of American public university, University of Michigan turned to be one of the leading public research universities under the outstanding presidents leadership and management. Angell, the fourth President of the University of Michigan and the wellknown president after the American civil war, led the university completing the transformation from the traditional college to the modern university, and at the same time made the university attain the reputation of “the mother of American public university”.
