Abstract The midlate 19th century was the structure transformation period of American higher education. Charles Eliot and the reform he promoted in Harvard university have made significant impact on American higher education. The reform lasted 40 years, involving the reform of daily management, organization and personnel, curriculum, graduate education and professional schools. Harvard turned to be a real modern university from a traditional colonial college after several decades of arduous reform and advanced the reform process of other traditional colleges.
