Abstract Adopting the approach of institutional analysis, this paper intends to explore some functional defects and implementation barriers in lesson observation and evaluation system in a Beijing university from the regulative, normative and culturalcognitive perspectives. Under the principle of peopleoriented optimization, it also proposes some suggestions on the reform of the current system regarding institutional positioning, evaluation criteria and assessment model with the aim of promoting teaching management, supervising and guaranteeing teaching quality and achieving teachers professional development.
