A new method to reduce loss of bearingless switched reluctance motors

Abstract:To meet the performance requirements of low power consumption and small temperature rise of bearingless motors in flywheel energy storage, bioengineering and medical fields, a new method for reducing operation loss of bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM) was proposed. The suspension force model and the torque model with the consideration of rotor eccentricity were built based on Maxwell stress tensor method. The model availability and accuracy were verified by finite element method. The influences of rotor eccentricity on suspension current and torque were analyzed to build copper and iron loss models of BSRM. The control system was designed. The copper loss, iron loss and average torque of BSRM were simulated by Matlab with different eccentricity. The results show that copper loss and iron loss are respectively reduced by 15.5% and 10.8% with increased average torque of 4.8% when rotor is steady with eccentricity of 50 μm. The steady operation of BSRM with low loss can be realized by controlling rotor eccentricity in the region of steady magnetic suspension.
