Effects of a cinnamon extract on plasma glucose in diabetes mellitus type 2

Abstract:Objective: To investigate cinnamon extract as a supplemental medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Method: A total of 43 patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into cinnamon group(n=23) and control group(n=20)at random.On the basis of original drug treatment, the cinnamon group does additional medication of cinnamon tablet with a dose of 120 mg/d and the control group took placebo.Before and after treatment, both groups had their fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin(glycated haemoglobin Alc, HbA1c), serum creatinine, transaminases and blood lipid levels measured. Result: The fasting plasma glucose, glycated haemoglobin Alc(HbA1c)and triglyceride in the cinnamon groups were reduced significantly after treatment whereas the placebo group showed no remarkable change.The low-density lipoprotein(LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein(HDL-C),serum creatinine and aspartate aminotransferase(AST) in the cinnamon group showed no remarkable change after the experiment. The alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and total cholesterol of the placebo group significantly raised after treatment(P<0.05).Conclusion: Additional medication of cinnamon was effective in reducing the fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride and glycated haemoglobin Alc in patients with type 2 diabetes,and the toxic side effects were very low.
