Abstract:NVH performance of a new material, magnesium alloy AZ91D,for lightweight design of engine head cover was investigated.FEM and BEM methods were used to compare the performance of the original aluminum head cover and the alternative one.The simulation results show that the natural frequencies of the head cover of magnesium alloy are slightly lower than those of the aluminum one while the surface vibration response of the magnesium alloy cover is obviously lower because of its stronger damping property, which means that radiated noise from cover surface can be reduced.Related tests are conducted to validate the simulation results.
