Abstract: In order to relieve the increasingly severe traffic problems to some extent and ensure the convenience of travelers after arriving at destination, a conception of dual function railway transport model for passengers and cars was proposed. The necessity of the transport model was discussed based on the problems of traffic congestion, traffic accident, fuel consumption and exhaust pollution. The carriage pattern was introduced from the aspect of technical feasibility, and the trip costs of selfdriving model and dual function railway transport model were compared from economic feasibility. The social feasibility was demonstrated from the aspects of traffic accident, trip time, fuel consumption and exhaust emission, and the social and economic benefits of travelers, managers and operators were analyzed. The results indicate that the dual function railway transport model is beneficial to travelers, managers and operators. The proposed model is worth putting into practice and extending.
