Abstract:Nylon screen mesh with mean pore size of 90 μm was used as filter cloth to develop a dynamic membrane bioreactor(DMBR)system for treating the synthetic municipal wastewater. The membrane fouling characteristics and mechanism in three parallel DMBRs operated under different aeration intensities was investigated. The results show that either small or large sludge load has negative influence on membrane permeability. The fouling cake layer can not be effectively removed with small aeration intensity. The large aeration intensity can result in a severe breakup of sludge floes to release vast colloidal and soluble components and causes a rapid decrease of membrane permeability. The colloids and solutes are the key reasons for membrane fouling of DMBR with high aeration intensity. The content and composition of extracellular polymeric substances and the sludge viscosity have marked effect on the membrane fouling of dynamic membrane bioreactor.
