Maca polysaccharide improves immune status and 5FU
therapeutic efficacy in tumor-bearing mice |

Abstract Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of 5fluorouracil(5FU) after tumorbearing mice pretreated with Maca polysaccharide, and to investigate the possibility of applying maca polysaccharide before and in chemotherapy period to adjust the body immunity and serve as adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 30 mice were randomly divided into 5 groups, 6 in each group; the blank control growp and 5FU group were intragastrically administered with PBS, and the other three groups were intragastrically administered with low, medium and high doses of maca polysaccharide; take Lewis lung cancer(LLC) tumor bearing mice as models; except the blank control group, the other 4 groups of mice were injected intraperitoneally with 5FU. Models were observed for tumor inhibition and the tumor inhibitory rate was calculated. The number and proportion of CD4+T cells,CD8+T cells and Treg cells in the spleen were measured by flow cytometry. Results: In vivo experiments showed that the average tumor inhibition rates of the 5FU control group, low, medium and high doses of maca polysaccharideassisted 5FU group were 51.16%, 51.38%, 62.17% and 69.78%. The results of flow cytometry analysis showed that the ratio of CD4+T cells in the 5FU control group of 1 000 mg/kg maca polysaccharide was significantly higher than that in the 5FU control group(P<0.05). Conclusion: Maca polysaccharide combined with 5FU treatment can significantly delay the growth of tumor and increase the tumor inhibitory rate.
