Relationship between premature brain injury and the levels of erythropoietin
in cord blood and amniotic fluid

Abstract Objective: To explore the predictive value of cord blood and amniotic fluid erythropoietin (EPO) in early brain injury in preterm infants. Methods: A total of 97 cases of premature infants were divided into brain injury group and control group according to the cranial imaging examination, the levels of EPO in cord blood and amniotic fluid were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), then the relationship between premature brain injury and erythropoietin in cord blood and amniotic fluid was evaluated. Results: EPO levels of cord blood and amniotic fluid in brain injury group were significantly higher than those in the control group (both P<0.05).The sensitivity of cord blood EPO in predicting premature brain injury was 83.8% and the specificity was 78.3%.The sensitivity of amniotic fluid EPO in predicting premature brain injury was 75.7% and the specificity was 83.2%. The sensitivity of combined cord blood and amniotic fluid EPO in predicting brain injury was 75.7% and specificity was 93.3%. Conclusion: EPO may be used for the early prediction of brain injury in preterm infants.
