Abstract Both Chinese and English puns can be classified into three categories, namely, transparent puns,semi-transparent puns and opaque puns.By analyzing their respective working mechanism and interpretation, this paper finds that the initial phase of pun interpretation is mainly guided by the graded salience principle while the second, contextual integration phase of pun interpretation is mostly governed by the principle of relevance. In other words, the meaning activation depends on the graded salience of the individual intended meaning while the choice of meaning is decided by the contextual relevance of individual meanings.
