Abstract:The starvation in Jiangsu Province was an integral part of the nationwide starvation. Unnatural deaths caused by famine and food shortage in Jiangsu started in the winter of 1958 and spread until the first half of 1962, with the climax in 1959 and 1961. The main reason of the great starvation in Jiangsu was the destruction of rural productivity that presented itself in 6 aspects, but the root laid in the leftist thinking route of the Great Leap Forward and the People's Commune. The provincial committee of CPC was united, practical and ready to solve problems once found and thus checked the starvation in a sense although it couldn't resist the nationwide movements of the Great Leap Forward and the People's Commune; however, part of the county leaders who were leftist and pompous and many low-level officials that violated the law were one of the important causes that led to starvation. And this was one remarkable difference between Jiangsu and the more seriously starved provinces like Anhui, Henan and Sichuan.
