Abstract:By learning from his kins, teachers and friends, Yuan Haowen grew up to be a distinguished literary figure and social and cultural activist in the Later Jin and the Early Yuan Dynasties. His acquaintance with the traditional Chinese thoughts and culture shaped his values centered on Confucianism, especially his political and social values like his insistence on absolute power monarchy, feudal ethics of human relations, and his political ideology of national melting. These values were especially crystallized in his composition of epitaphs, in which Yuan unveiled such ideas of his as political loyalty to the monarch, putting people’s interests first, ruling a state by moral governance, and treating all nationalities equally.
