Abstract:The historical process of vernacular Chinese becoming the mainstream narrative tool was neither finished in one day, nor as simple as was told in the history of modern Chinese literature. The upgrading of vernacular Chinese was a complex historical process from the Late Qing Dynasty, and its canonization mirrored the complexity of Chinese literature from tradition to modernity. With “ripping, crossing and possibility” as the basic thinking trend, we deem it necessary to expound the complexity of such transformation.
