Abstract Blood pressure (BP) is one of dynamic physiological variables. Besides BP level itself, abnormal blood pressure variability (BPV) is also a risk factor of cardiovascular disease in the population at high cardiovascular risk. Abnormal BPV is associated with the occurrence, progression, and severity of damage to target organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys and blood vessels. It will result in increased risks of cardiovascular events, and incidences of cardiovascular and allcause mortalities while it is also an independent risk factor. In the risk stratification for cardiovascular diseases, besides paying attention to BP level, BPV monitoring should also be a part of routine clinical practice. This article mainly reviews the influence of abnormal BPV on related diseases, and the research advance in its clinical application.
