Abstract:"Xiushui 12" rice species was used as experimental plant to investigate effects of waterlogging stress on antioxidant enzymes and peroxide metabolites and identify tolerable submergence depth and its duration in various growth stages of rice by means of pot-culture and plant transplant method. In the experiments, waterlogging stage, depth and its duration were selected to be controlled factors, which were subject to three levels each. During a flooding experiment, a pot with plants cultured in farmland original soil was moved to a trough with a water level prescribed in advance and stayed there for a certain long of time. After the experiment, the ordinary irrigation was restored. The results showed that the content of antioxidant enzymes in the rice plants in the late growth stage was higher than that in the early growth stage, and an appropriate waterlogging stress could increase the content of antioxidant enzymes. The rice plants in different growth stages showed some resistance to waterlogging stress, but the ability to tolerate submergence depth and the sensitivity to the stress differed from one stage to another, particularity they had a strongest ability to tolerate submergence depth in tillering growth stage and were most sensitive to the stress in jointing growth stage. The tolerable submergence depth and duration of waterlogging were 3/4, 1/2, 3/4 plant height, 5, 3, 3 days in tillering, jointing and heading stages for the rice plants, respectively.
