Core idea, evolutionary path and system protection of discipline ecosystem: discussion on the generating mechanism of world firstclass disciplines |

Abstract Worldclass universities have a number of firstclass disciplines as a symbol, while the formation of firstclass disciplines takes a harmonious subject ecosystem as a prerequisite. As a social system distinct from naturalism, the disciplinary ecological system has four basic propositions. Firstly, we should attach great importance to the disciplines′ ecosystem health and its overall competitiveness. Secondly, the subject diversity is the precondition of sustainable development of the system. Thirdly, the superiority discipline group decides the academic level of discipline system. Fourthly, universities should build academic community for knowledge production and cooperative education. On this basis, the paper constructs the matrix structure of the discipline system evolution strategy according to the dimensions of external openness and internal correlation, and provides four states and two advanced strategies. Comparatively speaking, it is a top concern to optimize the internal structure of discipline organizations and ensure a shift from independence to cooperation among discipline organizations; then to focus on the problems of discipline system in applicationorientated cooperation and find an optimum way to construct discipline ecosystem. For a smooth implementation, the authorities need to activate the vitality of grassroots academic organizations, study the system′s supply way and content, and construct a harmonious discipline ecological environment to facilitate the Double Worldclasses Development.
