Abstract This paper compares and evaluates the improvement of the core competitiveness of Chinese 985Project universities in the new century by using the data from the Thomson Reuters, CNKI database, National Bureau of Statics, and the Official website of the 985Project universities. Results show that since the 985Project was initiated the 985Project universities have developed very quickly and their research productivity, academic influence, technical innovation and disciplinary development capacity have improved greatly. Seventynine disciplines of 39 Chinese 985Project universities are listed in the rankings of the five disciplines in the world. With their great comprehensive strength and core competitiveness, some disciplines of Peking University and other universities are in the leading position among their international counterparts.
