Abstract The present study conducted interviews of the students from four “985Project” universities in Central China and made an analysis of the process of the “qualitycosttoquality” transformation in their talent production with structural equation modeling. The results show that the driving force of the transformation is the stock of their cultural capital and the investment in maintaining their historical tradition, brand value and cultural atmosphere has played an important role in promoting talent production, indicating that the idea of “offering services for teachers and students” should be further reinforced and the benefits of “teaching and research” should be improved so as to fully exercise the active and potential role of cultural and social capital in the transformation of human capital in the production of outstanding talents.
