Abstract ChatGPT has many strong linguistic functions with its huge neural network and advanced training method. It is thus broadly used in diverse educational occasions. Supervisorgraduate student relationships in higher education institutions might be affected by ChatGPT. We proposed four potential mechanisms how supervisorgraduate student relationships are affected by ChatGPT in this article: a) occurance of ChatGPT is changing internal and external campus environment that supervisorgraduate student relationships depend on; b) supervisorgraduate student relationships might be affected via supervisors; c) supervisorgraduate student relationships might be affected via graduate students; d) ChatGPT might affect interaction manners between supervisors and graduate students. Additionally, compatibility between supervisors′ acceptance for the new technique and graduate students′ might be also nonnegligible. Different types of supervisorgraduate student relationships might be unequally affected by ChatGPT, which in turn leads to conversion between different types of supervisorgraduate student relationships. Therefore, supervisors and graduate students are expected to a) be open to the new technique that can help to form a cooperative relationship; b) be cautious of output of ChatGPT to avoid unperceived alienation of values and cognitions; c) comply with the academic ethics and appropriately use the new technique; d) reinforce the supervisorgraduate student communications; e) regularly scale and trace the relationships using appropriate tools.
