Abstract The interpersonal relationship between faculty and administrators in American universities features mutual trust instead of conflict, and administrators have a more positive attitude towards their relationship. This is closely associated with the consciousness of equality and a fear of power abuse in American culture. On the whole, this kind of relationship is beneficial for the effective governance of universities. In Chinese culture, the relationship between university faculty and administrators is not conductive to sound governance. To overcome this problem, Chinese universities should clarify and restrict the power of higher level leaders, reinforce the conversation between higher level leaders and faculty, and improve the mechanism of teachers′ participation in university governance.
