Abstract:In 1990s, Japanese Ministry of Science and Technology revised the “Standards for Establishing Universities” twice and it was stipulated that colleges and universities should take faculty development as one of their obligations. From then on, many higher education institutions have established their own faculty development centers in order to promote teaching and learning. The Kansai region with Kyoto as its center is one of the most developed regions in Japan in terms of higher education. The field survey of Kyoto University, Doshisha University and Ritsumeikan University reveals the organizational situation and realistic measures of the faculty development centers in Japanese universities of different levels and types.
