Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on the recurrence of atrial fibrillation. Methods: The databases of Medline, EMBASE, Elsevier and Cochrane library were searched for randomized controlled trials. Quality assessment and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers. Statistical analyses were conducted with RevMan 5.0 and Stata 10.0 software. Results: Studies with 1 839 patients were enrolled into this metaanalysis. Meta-analysis result showed that treatment with PUFA did not reduce the rate of recurrence of atrial fibrillation (RR=0.96, 95% CI 0.75-1.22, P=0.74). Sub-group analysis showed that PUFA could reduce the rate of recurrence of atrial fibrillation in the sub-group that patients were treated with PUFA more than 28 days before the following-up (RR=0.720,95% CI 0.622-0.835, P<0.01). Conclusion: The results of the present meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials suggested that treatment with PUFA did not reduce the rate of recurrence of atrial fibrillation.
