Abstract: Academic reading is an important part in the training of postgraduates. It is especially the case with students in social sciences because cultivation of academic reading is the basis of the improvement of their research ability. Taking sociology and anthropology, the authors discuss how to do effective academic reading in seven aspects, namely cultivation of reading interest, ways of reading, the relationship between dissertation and reading, attitude toward reading, and notemaking methods, with a view to contributing to the development of Chinas graduate training system reform.
