Abstract Methyl methaerylates were polymerized on the surface of highly disordered rice husk activated carbon(RAC) channel using benzoyl peroxide initiator and acetone solvent. The structural component of the product was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared ( FT - IR). The amount of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. The surface area was reduced by 44% and pore volume decreased bv 32% according to the N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The transmission electron microscope images show that there are a lot of PMMA existing on the channel surface of PMMA - RAC materials. The phenol saturated adsorption by PMMA - RAC is increased by 14%. The result indicates that new organic and inorganic, nano-composite absorption materials with both high surface area and functional groups can be prepared by in-situ polymerization
