Abstract The 6 phase-stepping photoelastic technique is applied to measure the in-situ shear stress in a single-thin（25 μm） E-glass fibre end and fibre-break of fibre composites. From the analysis, there are regions of high isochromatic flinge order in the vicinity of the fibre-end and fibre-break, indicating the existence of high stress concentration zones. The peaks in the shear stress curves around the fibre-ends occur at 7, 18 and 33 μm away from the fibre-ends at the loads of 18.38, 25.61 and 32.53 MPa, repectively, which correspond to the maximum interracial shear stresses of 26.87, 30.22 and 33.20 MPa. The maximum inteffacial shear stress about 30 MPa appears at 25 μm away from the fibre-break at the load of 24.69 MPa. With the applied stress increasing to 33.09 MPa, the region of high fringe order propagates along the fibre away from the fibre-break and the maximum inteffacial shear stress reachs to about 36 MPa.
