Abstract β-ZrWMoO8 which exhibits excellent isotropic negative thermal expansion property was synthesized using coprecipitation method. The ZrO2/β-ZrWMoO8 composites with controllable thermal expansion coefficient were prepared by mixing ZrO2 and β-ZrWMoO8 at different mass ratios and sintered at 1 020 ℃ for 2 h. The structure and morphology of the resulting products were characterized by XRD and SEM. The thermal expansion coefficients of the composites were tested by thermomechanical analysis. Results reveal that all the thermal expansion properties of the ZrO2/β-ZrWMoO8 composites are linear for the temperature range from 30 to 600 ℃. The thermal expansion coefficient of the composites can be controlled as positive, negative or zero by adjusting the mass fraction of β-ZrWMoO8. The value can reach nearly zero when the mass fraction of β-ZrWMoO8 in the composite is 50%.
