Non-interrupt control optimization of expressway with high interweaved traffic |

Abstract To solve the problem of congestion in the interweaving area of Nanjing inner ring expressway during rush hour, an non-interrupt weaving area control strategy was proposed based on five-lane weaving area with 2 ramps for vehicles driving in 4.5 lanes on average. For the priority to improve the main road capacity and increase the speed of weaving vehicles, the traffic diversion of weaving and non-weaving traffic flow in advance made the vehicles run orderly, and the number of available lanes for weaving traffic flow was increased by one-way lane changing on the ramp. The capacity and the influence factors of service level in weaving area were analyzed, and three methods of speeding up, access control and sign-and-marks control were introduced for alleviating traffic congestion. The non-interrupt weaving area control strategy of vehicles driving in 4.5 lanes on average was proposed, and the simulation models were built to compare the average speeds of main road and side road in different schemes by VISSIM. The results show that under the conditions of heavy traffic and small interweave ratio in the weaving area, compared with no control measures, scheme B 4.5 lane weaving with one-way lane changing on the auxiliary line has significant effect in optimizing the main line driving speed with average increasing of more than 8%, and scheme D of one-way lane changing on the auxiliary line with separation of flow lines has significant effect in increasing the auxiliary line driving speed with average increasing of 6%-24%.
