Geometrical parameters optimization of cutting tools based on finite element simulation |

Abstract To investigate the influence of geometrical parameters of cutting tools on machining process and surface quality of difficultmachining aircraft materials under dry cutting condition, 2D finite element model for orthogonal cutting process was established, and the dry turning process of GH169 with cubic boron nitride cutting tools was simulated by AdvantEdge FEM software. The effects of rake angle, clearance angle and cutting edge radius on surface residual stress were examined. The comprehensive influence of geometrical parameters of cutting tools on cutting force, cutting temperature and maximum residual tensile stress was analyzed and calculated by matrix analysis method, and the optimal combination of geometrical parameters of cutting tools was obtained. With the optimal parameters combination, the life of cutting tools can be prolonged, and the surface quality of workpiece can be improved.
