Abstract Tubular cathode and planar anode were prepared with Ti capillary and Ti mesh plate, which were used as the cathode and anode substrates of direct ethanol fuel cells(DEFCs), respectively. Pt/C was used as cathode catalyst, PtRu/C was used as anode catalyst, Nafion solution recasting membrane and Nafion115 were used as proton exchange membrane. The microstructures of the specialshaped cathode and anode were studied. The effect of abnormal electrodes upon DEFCs was studied through single cell test. The result shows that the recasting Nafion menbrane of the tubular cathode is uniform and anode catalyst layer is strongly combined with Ti mesh, and that the single cell performance of DEFCs can be enhanced by higher flow rate of O2. When the loading of Nafion membrane is ≥25 mg/cm2, the impedance of DEFCs would be enhanced. However, when the loading of Nafion membrane is ≤202 mg/cm2, the life of DEFCs would be shortened greatly.
