Abstract To investigate the effect of nanofluid and dispersant on the performance of gravity heat pipe, the starting performance (startup time and start temperature) and the heat transfer performance (tube wall temperature distribution at stable state and total thermal resistance) of different heat pipes were determined separately. The results show that the addition and the physical properties of nanoparticles have effects on the startup time of heat pipe. The startup time of heat pipe with nanofluid is 1.3~3.2 min shorter than that of the conventional one with deionized water as working fluid. The addition of dispersant also affects the heat transfer performance of heat pipe. Under the condition of high heat flux, the performance of nanofluid heat pipe with twelve sodium alkyl sulfate (SDS) as dispersant is better than that with arabia gum (AG) as dispersant. The thermal resistance of nanofluid heat pipe with dispersant is significantly decreased by 26.4%~63.9%.
