Abstract Steel corrosion is an important factor on service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, and concrete cracking induced rebar corrosion is a critical point of structural durability life. Based on the assumption of concrete following twin shear strength criterion, according to thickwalled cylinder theory, the elastoplastic analysis of rebar uniform corrosion expansion process was conducted, and the thickwalled cylinder model of uniform rust expansion was established. Combined with the Faraday law, the time equation of concrete cracking induced rebar rust was calculated. The main factors affecting the equation were analyzed. The results show that with the increasing of cover thickness, decreasing of rebar diameter and reducing volume expansion of corrosion products, the durability of RC structures is improved. The concrete strength has little effect on the durability of RC structures. The theoretical values of calculation are in good agreement with the existing experimental results, and the proposed equation is reasonable and feasible.
