Abstract Particle image velocimetry was adopted to measure and analyze the saltout crystal particle size distribution in a centrifugal pump impeller at different operating conditions. Experimental results show that almost all particles at the inlet are small and distributed evenly at intermediate axial crosssection of impeller. The particle number density is different at different axial direction with the characteristics of small density at axial crosssection near front cover and large density near rear cover. There are some large crystal particles along radial direction, which are mainly located near the pressure side with even distribution at the outlet. When the experiment flow rate is increased from 0-8Q to 1-2Q, the aggregation tendency of large particles to the pressure side becomes obvious with larger average particle size gradient. The particle number density becomes larger and number of largesize particles is increased significantly with the raise of solid volume fraction from 0-75C to 1-25C. When solution temperature grows from 35 ℃ to 39 ℃, both the particle size and number density decrease obviously due to solubility increasing at high temperature.
