Abstract The non-linear friction torque of a high precision electromagnetic clutch is studied by using an axi-symmetric finite element model. By discussing the rationality of analysis process and analytical resuits, analytically predicted static friction torques are compared with experimental torques. Air gaps of each mechanical parts are considered in the axi-symmetric FEM model. The predicted torques by FEM model are 7.52% higher than experimental torques, which proves the validity of FEM model. Non-linear magnetic force distributions related to air gap （between rotor and armature）under applied voltages of 21 V,24 V and 27 V are also presented.
