Abstract:To ensure the safety of intersections under the effect of flashing green, the flashing green length was calculated based on vehicles not falling in ″dilemma zone″. The travel time was divided into several types according to driving characteristics of last vehicle of current phase and first vehicle of next phase, and calculating formulas of green interval under different volume conditions were developed. The values of green interval under different conditions were obtained with a case study in Yangzhou city. The results indicate that the values of green interval with flashing green are higher than that without flashing green. The difference values between two green intervals are higher for lower volume or lower initial speed of last vehicle of current phase, which means that flashing green is helpful to improve the efficiency of intersection.
