Abstract Objective: To evaluate the association of UNC-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) expression with clinicopathological characteristics and survival time in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: The expression levels of ULK1 in 94 ESCC and 78 paracancerous tissues were examined using immunohistochemical staining. Results: The levels of cytoplasmic ULK1 expression in ESCC tissues were higher than those in paracancerous tissues(P<0.01).ULK1 expression was significantly associated with lymphatic metastasis(P<0.05).Survival analysis showed that patients with low ULK1 expression had shorter survival time than those with high ULK1 expression(hazard rate=1.754,95%CI 1.022-3.010,P=0.041). Conclusion: ULK1 was aberrantly expressed in ESCC. Patients with low ULK1 expression had shorter survival rate. ULK1 may be a potential prognostic biomarker for ESCC patients.
