Abstract Proper industrial agglomeration can guide a region's economy to intensive and large-scale development as well as be the necessary requirement of green development. This paper constructs the urban green economic efficiency index via analyzing the mechanism of urban industrial agglomeration's impact on green economic efficiency, and tests the impact with the 2003—2018 panel data of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration. It is found that the increase of specialized industrial agglomeration may restrain the efficiency of green economy while industrial diversification has a U relationship with green economic efficiency. It is also found that the impact of industrial agglomeration on green economic efficiency varies with cities: it is more obvious in small cities than in big ones. So it is suggested that the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration should be further diversified in line with the local capacity and different policies of agglomeration be made according to the sizes of cities.
