Abstract In the course of the development of capitalist societies, the balance between freedom and equality during the capitalist revolution eventually slanted to freedom during the age of free capitalism. In modem time, this imbalance is in a sense gaining harmony. Based on the analysis of the history of Western thoughts and politics which can be roughly divided into four periods : the ages of capitalist revolution, free capitalism, monopoly capitalism and welfare countries, this essay inspects the tension movement of freedom and equality in the context of capital and envisions the trend of this movement in the future.
